Addressing Safety Concerns: GMC Sierra HD Recall for Inadequate Diesel Fuel Pump Flow

The Recall Issue and Affected Vehicles

GM has initiated a product safety recall for select units of the 2017 to 2019 GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks equipped with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine and featuring the dual fuel tank feature (RPO code N2N). This recall also includes certain units of the 2017 to 2019 Chevy Silverado HD. The reason for the recall is the potential presence of a rear fuel pump defect.

Insufficient Fuel Pump Flow and Safety Hazards

The rear fuel pump in the affected vehicles may experience malfunction or damage, resulting in inadequate fuel transfer from the auxiliary fuel tank to the front fuel tank. This issue poses a safety hazard as insufficient fuel delivery from the rear tank to the front tank in the 2017 to 2019 GMC Sierra HD trucks could lead to stalling, potentially increasing the risk of accidents.

Remedial Measures and Repair Process

Authorized dealerships are required to conduct inspections on the affected GMC Sierra HD trucks to assess the condition of the auxiliary fuel tank and the auxiliary fuel tank pump module. If any damage is detected, GM instructs the dealerships to replace the auxiliary fuel tank and pump module. Furthermore, the dealership will install a new vent hose, also known as the diesel auxiliary fuel tank vent line, to prevent future issues with the auxiliary fuel pump and tank.

Sales Restrictions and Compliance

GM emphasizes that affected GMC Sierra HD units currently in inventory cannot be sold, traded to other dealerships, or used for demonstrations until the necessary repairs have been carried out. Failure to comply with this requirement is a violation of federal law for the involved dealership.

Scope of Affected Vehicles and Parts Availability

The recall affects a total of 186 vehicles, encompassing both GMC Sierra HD and Chevy Silverado HD pickup trucks from the 2017 to 2019 model years. Due to the relatively low number of affected trucks, GM advises dealers not to order the required parts as shelf stock but to request them only when an affected unit is identified.

By promptly addressing the safety concerns and implementing the recommended repair procedures, GM aims to ensure the proper functionality of the diesel fuel pump in the GMC Sierra HD trucks, prioritizing the safety of drivers and mitigating potential risks.

SafeDealsAI’s Efforts to Raise Awareness and Address the Issue

SafeDealsAI, a legal disclosure software used by dealers and consumers, aims to raise awareness by notifying a dealer at the time of sale if a vehicle has an open safety recall and if so, encourages the dealer to have the recall repaired. SafeDealsAI also discloses the recall information to the buyer.
