Even up until today, Friday June 21th, the attack continues!

Cyberattack Forces Temporary Closure of Key Automotive Software Platform

Precautionary Shutdown and Gradual Recovery

On Wednesday, June 19th, a cyberattack on CDK Global, a major software provider for car dealerships, disrupted operations across the United States. In response, CDK Global's spokesperson Lisa Finney announced that the company had shut down most of its systems to protect its customers. By Wednesday afternoon, CDK had successfully restored its core document management system and digital retailing solutions.

"We are continuing to conduct extensive tests on all other applications, and we will provide updates as we bring those applications back online," Finney stated in an email.

Although Finney did not specify the number of affected dealerships, CDK Global's website indicates that the company services over 15,000 retail locations across North America.

Understanding CDK Global's Role

CDK Global is a leading provider of cloud-based software solutions for dealerships. Their software facilitates various dealership operations, including vehicle acquisitions, sales, financing, insurance, repairs, and maintenance.

The Rising Threat of Cyber Attacks on Dealerships

This incident follows a recent cyberattack on Findlay Automotive Group, which operates in five states. The attack impaired their ability to conduct sales and service operations, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

A 2023 report from CDK Global highlights the increasing threat of cyberattacks on car dealerships. The report notes that 17% of 175 surveyed dealers experienced a cyber incident in the past year, an increase from 15% the previous year. Additionally, 46% of those affected reported significant financial or operational impacts.

Why Are Dealerships Targeted?

Car dealerships are appealing targets for cybercriminals due to the vast amounts of sensitive customer data they hold, including credit applications and financial information. According to a 2023 article by Zurich North America, dealerships possess a "treasure of information" for hackers.

Dealership systems are often interconnected with external service providers and portals, increasing vulnerability.
